Art by Zahrt is your source for bold, one-of-a-kind jewelry handcrafted by me, Jennifer Zahrt. I started making jewelry in 2002 in New York City; my craft continues now from my studio in Berkeley, California, where I’ve been pursuing my PhD in German Literature and Film at UC Berkeley for the last six years (I’m embarking on my 7th year now, yikes!). As a part of my studies, I’ve traveled to Germany multiple times, living in Leipzig and Berlin. I’ve also gone to Belgium (Bruges and Ghent), Netherlands (Maastricht), Italy (Venice) and Croatia (Pula, Split, and Makarska). Leipzig is my favorite European city. I lived near there in 1998 as a high school exchange student, and it was the first place I truly felt at home. All this traveling permeates my creative work. I try to capture a sense of the layered history, the effects of time on objects, in each project. I love working with vintage beads, semiprecious stone, and astrological symbolism. (Astrology is the ultimate science of time!)
As I grow as an artist, I’m always working on finding new techniques to incorporate into my work. This blog is designed share my process with you. Ultimately, for me, the craft of jewelry is a craft about connection, from the first link in a chain, to the artist who brings the materials together, to the wearer and the stories that are woven together.
